Ariel- The Shimmering Star Necklace
Alright, as promised, I've finished scanning the new Princess chapter book.  Now, these chapter books don't scan as nicely as other Princess books I have, so they're not up to the level of quality I'd like, especially the pages with the pictures.  Seriously, if anyone has any pointers on how to get these to look better, especially dealing with the scan lines on the pictures, I'd love to hear from you.

As for the book itself, they've really stepped it up in terms of story.  Remember that Rapunzel chapter book I posted back in December?  It wasn't a very engaging story and there wasn't any kind of real conflict or suspense, but it was pretty cute, right?  Compared with that and a few other of the first Princess chapter books (Cinderella's and Aurora's come to mind), this does a much better job in holding your interest.  It also has a little bit of suspense to it.  As you go along you have an inkling of how things will turn out, but it doesn't all fall together right away there are parts where you don't know for certain what will happen next.  There are one or two little problems, but it holds up rather well, in my opinion.
As for the artwork, I'll just say this.  You're going to love it.  It's adorable.

Well, now that that's out of the way, here's the story!

Why do they always include the backstory with these?  Kids don't have that bad of a memory, do they?

Awwwww yeah, It's Cindy's story next.  And I'd be happy to share it with you all.

Here's a little something extra.  It's the artwork cut out from the original scan,  so it's in an unedited form, but hopefully it can be worked on.

Plus, at the bottom, I have a request for you all.

Okay, I have one thing to ask you all.  I've been mulling it around in my head for a while, and I thought I'd get an opinion from you whether or not you'd like to see me do a post on it.  I know my past couple of posts have been nothing but cute, cute, cute, and looking at all of it makes you wonder, what is it that makes this stuff so cute?  And it would basically be my thoughts on the kinds of things they do that makes to make it as cute as it is.  It's going to be a long-ish post, but not a dissertation or anything,  probably 6-10 paragraphs about as long as this one.  I just think it would be neat topic to have a little discussion on.

And for what it's worth, I'd like to say that while the words "cute" and "adorable" have popped up frequently in my recent posts, some of this (like the Cinderella book) I've been meaning to put up here for months, so it's not like all my posts will be just cutesy stuff.  I won't beat you over the head with cute is what I'm saying.

There's every TLM fan's dream - turn into a mermaid and swim with Ariel!

I'd like to read your thoughts on the cuteness inherent to the franchise. It'd be a good discussion post.

Random but do you know when it comes out? I saw the leaks and now I'm just dying to see it.
Meg: Aladdin princess5899 on March 18th, 2012 06:13 am (UTC)
Well it's going to air on Nick the 14th of April. But Mike and Bryan decided to challenge the Korra fans by making a site called korranation.com. In their challenge they stated that if we (the US) could reach 100,000 likes and shares we would release the first episode early, showing worldwide on there site March 24th. Their challenge was completed today! So all hops to the 24th web showing!

Ok we are getting off topic lol. :P But you know the first ep I think was leaked online. I just saw it yesterday. I think if you type in Legend of Korra Dubhappy on google you will get a link with the first ep. It's awesome!
Meg: Aladdin princess5899 on March 19th, 2012 04:09 am (UTC)
Yeah apparently XD Didn't mean to start up a whole thread about it :3

Yeah I know that its up, but I hate watching leaks. I've actually only seen one trailer and (almost all of the) concept art. :) Thanks for the info though!

Apparently, the whole episode has been leaked already on the internet, though I don't know how quality the footage is.

Either way, I think I'll wait until April so I can watch it comfortably on my television screen :].
Meg: Aladdin princess5899 on March 19th, 2012 04:10 am (UTC)
Agreed. I don't like watching leaks. Ruins the experience for me, eh. XD

Can someone please summarize this book for me? Due to being visually impaired, I can't see the pictures that were scanned or read the tiny print. I wouldn't normally ask, but Ariel and Jasmine are my favorites. And I LOVE Avatar!

Ariel and the Shimmering Star Necklace - Summary Part One
I'm going to have to split this into two posts, since it's so long...

Ariel and the Shimmering Star Necklace - Summary Part One

Chapter One - Ariel is walking through the village market and sees a sign advertising an upcoming concert to be performed for the royal family by the local village school. This reminds her of an appointment, and she hurries to the house of a young girl named Laurel Hansen, to give her a music lesson. The music teacher had asked Ariel, who was great at music, to to help Laurel practice a song for the concert. (The song is titled "Song of the Sea" and is one of Eric's favorite songs.) While they practice, Laurel mentions that she has a new friend who would like the song, too- but Laurel is evasive when Ariel asks about Laurel's new friend, who is not named.

Chapter Two - Ariel continues to practice with Laurel every day. (There is a section after this explaining Ariel's background; it's basically a rehash of the movie.) After practice, Ariel goes to the beach to meet her sisters, who swim up to the beach to visit her. It's implied that the come to visit her this way often. They bring a basket of snacks and a special gift- a star-shaped "star shell", which is said to grant the first wish made to it when you sing a certain song to it.

Chapter Three - After singing the song, nothing happens and they realize that either the myth is fake or the wish for this star shell has already been used. There's a hole at the top of the star shell, so Ariel keeps it and turns it into a necklace, which she starts to wear. Ariel goes to meet Laurel for their last rehearsal before the concert, but Laurel's father turns up in a panic, asking where Laurel is. She's missing! They speculate that Laurel's mysterious new friend might have something to do with it, and the two scour Laurel's room in hopes of finding out her friend's name. They do find her diary...

Chapter Four - Laurel's diary mentions meeting a new friend named Calista at the end of Wavestone Path. The next diary entry mentions that they had been playing together often, and that Calista had given Laurel a necklace as a present. Laurel mentions wanting to show the necklace to Ariel, but that Calista had admonished her not to tell anyone about their friendship, since they're not supposed to be playing together. The entry ends with Laurel's plan to buy Calista a present from the local pastry shop. Ariel decides to go to Wavestone Path, where Calista seems to live- although she recalls that there are no houses there.

Ariel and the Shimmering Star Necklace - Summary Part Two

Chapter Five - Ariel reaches the end of Wavestone Path- and it leads to the ocean! There are no houses there, and the path seems to go into the sea. Scuttle makes an appearance, and is just as confused as always... When he mentions "dessert", Ariel remembers that Laurel had planned to buy Calista a pastry, and she hurries to the baker's shop to investigate. Over a honey bun, she asks the baker if Laurel had been by to purchase something for a friend and the baker affirms that she had been there- and bought seaweed puffs. A girl about Laurel's age- accompanied by her mother- pops into the bakery, and gives the baker a thank-you card. The girl is in Laurel's class, and it emerges that writing thank-you cards for a friend was a recent assignment. The girl knows Laurel, but not Calista, who is not in their class. Ariel recalls that Calista had given Laurel a gift, and speculates that Laurel's thank-you note might have been for Calista- in which case it might contain a clue.

Chapter Six - Ariel rushes to the school and pores through the thank-you notes, with the help of Laurel's teacher, but finds that Laurel's note is a thank-you to Ariel for the music lessons. The teacher mentions offhand that Laurel is a very creative artist, and had really enjoyed one of their recent assigments: an art project to draw their best friend. Ariel remembers that Laurel's room was covered with drawings and artwork- perhaps the picture of her best friend is there! After searching her room, they find the drawing hidden in a music book. It's a drawing of a girl who looks like Laurel, with her friend- a mermaid!

Chapter Seven - They realize that Calista must be a mermaid, and the secrecy was because of worry that she would get in trouble for playing with a human friend, since mermaids don't come to the surface very often. A closer look at the drawing shows that Laurel was wearing a star shell necklace, which must be the gift from Calista. Ariel and Laurel's father, Mister Hansen, run to the sea and meet Sebastian and Flounder, who are asked to summon her father. King Triton appears, and at Ariel's request turns her into a mermaid so she can look underwater for Calista. A royal herald is invoked to announce a search for a mermaid named Calista throughout the large city of Atlantica. After some confusion with mermaids having similar names, they locate Calista's house.

Chapter Eight - Calista's mother answers the door of her simple vine cottage, surprised to see King Triton there. Calista swims out of her room upon hearing her mother, and says that she needs to tell her something- but is cut short by the sight of Ariel and Triton. Ariel explains that Laurel's family is very worried, and Calista leads the group to her small bedroom. Laurel crawls out from hiding beneath the bed... She's been transformed into a mermaid! Both Laurel and Ariel are shocked by the other's form (since Laurel has previously only seen Ariel in human form.) Laurel explains that she was watching Calista swim, and it seemed so fun that she had wished to become a mermaid herself. In an instant, her wish had been granted and the two explored the sea together. During their fun, a current had carried away her star shell necklace... Calista sees that Ariel has a star necklace and grabs it, wishing aloud for Laurel to be restored to human form...

Ariel and the Shimmering Star Necklace - Summary Part Three
Oops! I needed three posts for it. ^^; Silly LJ character-limit...

Ariel and the Shimmering Star Necklace - Summary Part Three

Chapter Nine - Nothing happens. Thinking that perhaps they need to be at the surface for that wish to be granted, they swim to the sky. Ariel informs them that according to the legend, the star shell can only be used once- which is why it isn't working now. Laurel despairs, and Ariel inquires whether Triton can turn Laurel back, but his trident isn't enough to undo a star shell wish- but he notes that according to the legend, breaking the star shell will undo its powers. Laurel is sad to forever lose the ability to become a mermaid, but she must return to her family and Calista bids her goodbye. Ariel points out that Laurel and Calista can still meet at the seashore, just like Ariel meets her sisters there. They return to shore and after Triton turns Ariel back into a human, break the shell to transform Laurel back, too. She's happily reunited with her relieved father, and turns to wave goodbye to her friends in the sea. It's almost time for the concert...

Chapter Ten - Ariel and Eric watch as the concert begins. Calista also watches from the sea, as Laurel begins a solo of "The Song of the Sea". The concer- with more songs- continues until after nightfall, when lanterns are lit. Afterwards, Laurel, Ariel and Mister Hansen slip away to the waterside. Ariel gives Laurel and Calista two necklaces made from pieces of the first star necklace as a token of friendship. Eric appears and places a hand around Ariel's shoulders. The story closes with Ariel thinking that if she had a wish right now, she would wish for this moment to last forever.

Re: Ariel and the Shimmering Star Necklace - Summary Part Three
Aloha! This summary was awesome! I can't wait to get this book in an excessable format! I LOVED the summary and I could hear most of it happening as though it was an episode! I could hear Jodi, Sam and all the others. Thank you so much! What you did meant a lot to me.

Seriously, if anyone has any pointers on how to get these to look better, especially dealing with the scan lines on the pictures, I'd love to hear from you.
--

Just some random ponderings:

Use a good camera (not a phone/etc.).
Use natural light. Glossy pages won't work with flash, so I use "digital macro" on my canon. If it's not glossy, I still get the occasional line.
Don't zoom in.
Huge images are great. You can resize and make them look better.
One page per photo might also help (more time though)
Editing is never a bad thing. Depending on time ,you can edit the photos to a graphic program to sharpen, adjust, etc.

Thank you for the wonderful pics!

I haven't taken the time to read it, but am I the only one thinking that some of the outfits seem a little out of place given the film? I mean, I know they've never established when/where the movie takes place (Denmark/France being the main locations typically assumed), but some of the outfits/styles seem so out of sync. Idk, maybe it's just me.
