Disney Movie Theater Memories
I was just thinking about the first time I ever saw TLM in theaters. And that led me to think about the first time I ever saw a Disney movie in theaters…

And since the story involves two Disney Princesses, I figured I’d share it with everyone here!

As Julie Andrews said in “The Sound of Music” Let’s start at the very beginning. A very good place to start. I tend to agree with her on that point, so let’s go!

It all started when I went to see my first Disney movie in a theater. I was about three or four at the time. This also translates into the first movie I ever saw in a theater period, but that’s beside the point.

Anyway, my parents took me to see “Snow White and the Seven Dorks” Oops! Darn typo! Did I really just say that? I’m sorry. I meant “Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs.”

Needless to say, we didn’t stay long. We got the popcorn and drink and I got some M&M’s. After that, we went inside and sat down.

The previews were cool and I enjoyed them. Fifteen minutes into the movie, I started crying. Apparently, something scared me. I don’t know what, but all I know is I did NOT want to stay. We ended up going home and that was that.

Two years later, my parents decided to try again. They had heard “The little Mermaid” was coming out and they gotten tickets for it.

So we get to the theater and we buy some snacks and go inside. The previews end and the movie starts. I didn’t start crying this time until Ariel started singing “Part of That World.” My Dad asked me if I wanted to leave and I shook my head. I wasn’t crying this time from being afraid. I was crying from empathy and because I had never heard someone sing so beautifully in my life! After that, I was officially hooked so to speak!

During the storm scene, my parents were trying to figure out why I wasn’t begging them to take me home or even flinching at all the loud noise and flashes of lightning. I jumped once, but it was when the ship caught fire.

When Ariel sang “Part of Your World” the reprise, I was smiling so brightly, it could have lit up the room!

The next scene that touched me deeply was the destruction of the grotto. I was fine with them arguing and all. But when Triton started destroying her stuff, I burst into tears once again. I kept yelling, “Stop! You’re hurting Ariel’s treasures! Stop!” Throughout almost the whole scene. Then as Triton was about to destroy Eric’s statue, I shouted, “NO!” And then I really lost it. I’m not sure if I yelled it with her or not. All I know is I was actually shaking I was crying so hard. My Dad asked me if I wanted to leave and I told him no. He asked me if I was sure and I nodded.

I was fine throughout the rest of the movie. I thought Scuttle was hilarious and I laughed a lot at Sebastian too. I did yell “No!” Once when Ariel gave her voice to the sea witch to be with Eric, but after that I was okay.

I do remember something really funny I did. When it got to the part where Sebastian was trying to coach Ariel on kissing Eric, I started giggling really hard. After I was calm, I leaned over to my Dad and asked, “When was the last time Sebastian kissed anyone?”

Also, during “Part of That World” once I had calmed down, I said something funny in response to something Ariel said in the song. When she said, “who don’t reprimand their daughters.” I went, “Yeah right.” My Dad heard me, but didn’t say anything about it until we had left the theater two hours later.

Once the movie was over, I turned to my Dad and asked, “Can we go again?” “Sure.” He replied. “I think there’s a new movie coming out in a few months.” I shook my head. “No. I wanna see Ariel again. It was awesome!”

And so began my love for a certain little mermaid who not only taught me to follow my dreams, but later on helped me realize I was someone special and I did matter. And that was something I will never forget.

I hope everyone enjoyed this little fish tale. Now how about the rest of you out there? What was your first experience seeing a Disney movie in theaters like? I’m just curious. GOL! That’s just one of many traits Ariel and I have in common.

TLM is one of my fav Disney movies, but the very first time I saw it? Wasn't.. very.. impressed

It was with a neighbor's daughter, on their shiny new VCR and I spoke exactly 5 words of English back then so didn't understand most of it ^^;; I do remember LOVING the music & being amazed at "Under the Sea" animation, but being very confused by the ending & Ariel's collecting of things (was expecting it to be more like the book)

The only Disney movie seen in a theater was "Enchanted" and to say "z0mg, amazing!!!" is to say nothing at all =P

Idk how character defining for me it was but the first movie I ever saw in the cinema was Hercules when I was 7...

I loved Meg's character though, and I suppose she might have impacted me, I've been stamped as her over at a disney stamping com and I'm quite snarky... lol

The first movie I saw in theaters was Beauty and the Beast. Ever since then I've wanted to be Belle. It also inspired me to start singing.

But before that I had a VHS of The Little Mermaid. It was Thanksgiving and my poor aunt was sick in bed. So her marvelous, loving, kind 4 year old niece decided to keep her company while she was sick. I popped in the video and didn't reemerge for something like...6 hours? Without ever having seen the show again, my aunt can still name Ariel's sisters and recite the lines from the film. She DESPISES the movie. Lol. So when it came out on DVD, naturally we gave each other copies. Then, when I saw TLM on Broadway, I brought her back the best souvenir ever....a plastic Dinglehopper! :D

She really did. And "Her Voice" broke my heart. But Norm Lewis (Triton) will always hold a special place in my heart. I've been a fan for years and I sat in the front row. At the door, he not only recognized me but spent like 10 minutes talking to me. Nicest man ever! Heidi Montag was also amazing as Ursula. And one of the sweetest people in the cast to boot. Sierra was very nice but gave more time to the little girls. (Can you blame her?)

"Beyond my Wildest Dreams" made me just go "yaaaaaaaaaaay!" (complete with fangirly flailing) and wonder why something so magical was never animated, and then "if Only" broke my heart
