If Rapunzel was 2D..
Found this at some disney forum online, while I was trying to find anything 'Tangled' related. I found a very interesting photo which is a photo of cardboard cutout of Rapunzel, but in 2d? I have to wonder if this will be the way to put Rapunzel with the other Disney Princesses which are 2d characters?

Thats a good point actually. I assume Rapunzel will become part of the Disney Princess line and she wouldn't fit in with the other art if she was all shiny CGI lookin.

I like her better in 2D, honestly. I find her so amazing like this.

I agree. I really like her as 2D. Oh well.

I would like to third this.

More than likely she will probably be in 2D when she's placed with all the rest of the princesses.

her clothing design in really interesting, I wonder what period it's inspired from? (I've always preferred the more practical clothing they seem to start out with, however, then the bedazzling gowns later on)

This has probably been mentioned more than once when her character design first started out, but would anybody else prefer it if her eyes were smaller, or is it just me?

I agree about the eyes. I know they're supposed to be exaggerated, but the proportions still seem wonky to me.

Well, I love Ariel's eyes, :-)
dark_rapunzeldark_rapunzel on May 17th, 2010 01:41 pm (UTC)
I love Ariel's eyes, but I feel like Rapunzel's are even bigger than Ariel's. Ariel's fit her head and look nicely. Rapunzel is slightly scary. Lol, although I am loving her hair, especially on this cut out and the ornament someone else posted.

But how do you define that? I'd say in this picture, Ariel's eyes take up as much space as Rapunzel's XD All the Disney Princesses have big eyes (see Jasmine), I'm not sure why it's an issue. Even in early sketches, her eyes were pretty big.
Coffeepod79 on May 17th, 2010 06:32 pm (UTC)
I think the problem is not her eyes, but the fact that she has no puffy hair to balance them out. Jasmine and Ariel do, but her hair is all flat and makes her head perhaps look smaller.

But she's a cartoon, correct? Her proportions aren't going to make sense. Her head is probably bigger than her stomach. How do you define what "too small" is? XD

I've noticed that Ariel is one of those characters who tends to look very different in every shot. She seems to always be drawn a little differently, looking off-model but in a good way.
Outside of her original movie, though, they seem to have actually decided on what her "on model" look is (and it sometimes looks kind of odd, if not a little lifeless).

I guess what I'm trying to say is that Ariel's big eyes, little nose and heart shaped face are a little more nebulous and hard to pull off than one might assume.
melissa: ariel: potw// arielstreasures on May 18th, 2010 02:30 am (UTC)
Not that I'm saying Rapunzel looks like Ariel...more so that I don't understand why Rapunzel's big eyes merits almost unanimous disgust and aversion, when there is enormous love for a character who has big eyes already.
The puriny onemogumogu on May 18th, 2010 09:32 pm (UTC)
Well, what I mean to say is that the big eyes (and tiny nose and heart shaped face) construct seems quite simple and formulaic when it's actually a lot harder to pull off than it looks (just think of the attempts of lesser artists).

I think some of the pics that got the least approval were storybook and merch pics, right? It could be the work of a lesser artist. I think the fact that Rapunzel is a 3D model instead of a 2D illustration changes the way people look at her. I think, in some shots, some viewers get an uncanny valley experience they might not have gotten from a drawing (and drawings can use certain cheats that 3D, in or out of a computer, can't).

Another thought: You know how they jazz up 2D images for covers, posters, clip art and such? I wonder if and what they do to "improve" Rapunzel.

Oh, I repeated myself. Redundant explanation is redundant.

I think her dress actually looks a little nicer here XD Maybe its the lighting...

That's a good point :) I found this online when I was looking for more info. Fan-made, but interesting XD

I guess I'm one of the few who prefers her 3D form.

Was it bigger wherever you found it, by any chance?

Sadly no D: It was on the Ultimate Disney messasge board, I think a part of someone's signature.

Well, that picture was on DisneyStore.com when Enchanted first came to theaters. Now they don't sell anything Enchanted except for books, the movie, and the soundtrack. :[ Damn Disney and their cheapness.
The hero of the story: People She Could Never Becaptain_sarah on May 17th, 2010 12:33 am (UTC)
I really hope so. She would seem very out of place if she's on a poster with all the 2D princesses but she's in 3D.
Mikkimiss_rockhopper on May 17th, 2010 12:54 am (UTC)
Wow, I think she looks a lot more interesting here. :O
The puriny one: Hmmm... Scarmogumogu on May 17th, 2010 01:18 am (UTC)
You know, I though something seemed off about her overall colors in 3D. I knew that she was wearing purple because it's complementary to yellow, but it didn't quite work for me the way it should have. Somehow, in this cutout, the colors work a lot more nicely and her design seems much more well defined.

Just here to say I hate her giant eyeballs x____x

Remember Snow White and Cinderella? RIP proportionate facial features
