Halloween 2010, Part 5: Adult Disney Princess Costumes
http://pics.livejournal.com/mdmbrightside/pic/000kgzkz

One of the most common themes in the comments section of the previous costume entries was how many wished the Disney Store made costumes for adults.

And... they don't. Well, not really. They have Maleficent, some new Alice Characters, Mickey and Minnie. That's it. Disney Store UK does better in that department, but that's another entry.

There are a plethora of licensed Disney costumes online, some that look remarkably close to their characters without being "sassy" or "flirty." I scrounged a few of those non-sexy costumes together that seemed the closest mimic to their character and were relatively easy to find the Internet over (Google the name of the costume if it's no longer available in that store). I also included a matching Prince costume where it was available.

So if you're looking for a quick way to a Princess dress, here's where you might start!

Admittedly, the last Cinderella dress is a good-bit-busty, but it's a detail that can be overlooked for the otherwise gorgeous quality of that dress.

At this level, the best option always is to make the dress yourself. Whether through a seamstress, a reliable aunt, or your own handicraft you have the best control over materials, details, and a custom fit.

It can be more expensive than to just buy a costume and it's definitely more time consuming.
But it's the best way to go for an authentic, gorgeous costume.

Please add some of your favorite cosplay costumes in the comments for inspiration!

Good to know I'm not the only one who thought that Beast mask looked like an anvil had been dropped on it's head -_-.

Okay, I can have two costumes on Halloween. I can make that work -- somehow. I can totally flip back and forth between taking face paint on and off.

My sister-in-law and I were going to an adults-only costume contest as Alice and the Red Queen, but my 6-year-old is Tiana for Halloween this year and I -

You're 6. Your loud and show-stealing mother suddenly buys a costume that matches yours. Embarrassing, yes or no?

Anyway, my giant boobays might only fit the expensive as hell Cinderella costume out of the options here. Because I totally don't know nice seamstresses. (Yes, I do.)

I'd proclaim you the fake!Tiana and try to get you arrested for impersonation and treason in the Royal Court of Dad. Sadly, my accusations would probably go nowhere XD

What the heck is going on with that Pocahontas model? xD

I love the embroidery on the bodice of the Snow White. Ordinarily I wouldn't absolutely *FANGIRL!FLAIL* over a Cinderella costume, but the Elite Collection gown? OMG THAT IS SO GORGEOUS. ♥____♥ The Prestige Jasmine is really pretty, too.
agentakagentak on October 2nd, 2010 05:10 pm (UTC)
The "embroidery" on the actual dress is terribly applied paint :(

I love the Belle costume with the red cape!

Why can't they just put "Prince Philip" and "Prince Eric"? =3 Also, I bet a lot of guys would like to dress up as Shang!

I have the Ariel Deluxe dress. It's nice, a little itchy on the seam where the torso and fin meet, but it's nice quality (for a Halloween costume).
Molly: * Slackersfairest1 on October 2nd, 2010 04:02 pm (UTC)
If I cosplay as any of the princesses, it'll probably be Rapunzel. I have freckles and thus would not blend in well with most of the outfits.

Should they introduce a princess with freckles AND glasses, I'll go with that.

They're actually just dress patterns! Comparable work can be done stateside :D

There are some "scary" versions of costumes, I think at Rubies.com, I'm not sure, such as this "Helle's Belle."
Abigail: Halloween Princessesmdmbrightside on October 2nd, 2010 04:24 pm (UTC)
Oh yes - I've seen that around before. That might make a good entry - gothic or gorey Princess costumes. Thanks for the heads-up :D

OH DEAR GOD WHAT HAPPENED TO BEAST

I saw a bunch of these in the store the other day (Snow White Deluxe Adult Costume, Cinderella Deluxe Adult Costume, Ariel Deluxe Adult Costume and Adult Beauty and the Beast Belle Deluxe Adult Costume) and the quality was horrible! Frayed, open seams, frayed fabric... I was going to put one on and it was ripped completely just taking it off the hanger. I was so sad, but at $60 I expected something that would last at least one night!
Uberta ❁: Sophie - An Impertinent Questionuberta on October 2nd, 2010 05:11 pm (UTC)
Yeah, that is the creepiest Belle and Beast ever. I saw that one before and people were saying that he looks like he has balls on his chin, which he does, and isn't Belle a kid there?!

Is it wrong I want the Aurora dress pattern, just to see if it's as easy to screw it up as the fairies did?

Other than that LOVING the Meg-esque dress.

My favorite Disney cosplay's have been done by kelldar, and you can see them all on her page here:

http://kelldar.com/me/costuming/kelldex.html

as well as on her LJ. She's done Snow White, several different Belles, Blue Aurora, Giselle, and Jane (from Tarzan), as well as a ton of superheroines and Star Wars costumes and other movie costumes. ENJOY!

For those looking to make their own or have them made Simplicity has some patterns that wouldn't require further alteration:

Cinderella and Snow White

I've made Vanessa, Esmeralda, and Tinkerbell by modifying existing patterns(though I did draft Esmeralda's waist cincher myself):

My Tink wing tutorial with a picture of the dress at the end. I have a tutorial up for her wig as well.

Actually there is a costume shop near me that has a really awesome Beast costume... so it's always good to check local rental places too since they often have in-house seamstresses.

Also, Fan+Friend has some costume options too:

I've seen some of these before. I'm really tempted to buy the Aurora costume (and the Ariel costume, and the Belle costume, and...) but I think if I wait a few more years, Disney might make more official costumes. They seem to be making a lot more stuff for adults in recent years than they used to, hopefully this trend will continue.

The Belle costumes are not poofy enough.

I have a Snow White costume that I found at Target a couple years ago, but I think it's slightly different than the one pictured here.

How do you get such high quality pictures?

I think you should include the official Alice costume in this post. She's *technically* not a princess, but neither is Mulan, and Alice was a "Princess of Heart" in Kingdom Hearts.
Abigail: Halloween Princessesmdmbrightside on October 3rd, 2010 08:14 pm (UTC)
I think it's because Belle's yellow dress requires a lot of fabric in the skirt we don't see many mass-produced quality examples, which is a shame.

How do you get such high quality pictures?
I get them from their websites, from the Media section of Page Info in Mozilla :)

Mulan is an official Disney Princess for some reason, but I thinking of featuring some adult Alice costumes in another Halloween post :D
Victoria Bloom: Buffyvictorialupin on October 3rd, 2010 01:17 am (UTC)
I've only ever been Snow White for Halloween; I find wigs really itchy, so it's easiest for me to go with a Princess who has relatively short hair.

I've been considering being Maleficent for Halloween this year, but the headpiece might be itchy.
The puriny one: Chocobo polygon-style!mogumogu on October 3rd, 2010 06:16 am (UTC)
Once again... nobody can beat the Japanese at coordination and detail.

Unofficial costumes' names crack me up. Some obvious Rapunzel costumes have already shown up in Halloween catalogs.

I have bought several Disney Princess costumes commercially, but I was never happy with them. The materials and lack of detail were never good enough for me XD Now I make my own costumes (although I've only done a fairly ghetto Aurora, animated Giselle, Wendy and I'm doing Rosetta this year for Halloween).
